Nature Trail

The old Lapal Canal, the Millennium Wood and an avenue of mature oak trees left over from its days as a farm provide Selly Oak Park with a range of natural habitats for birds, bats and insects. Our unique nature trail celebrates this natural history with a mixture of information points, sculptures and play features.

The trail also celebrates the history of the park from its earliest roots as a medieval deer park through to its inception as the first public park in Selly Oak over 100 years ago.

The nature trail forms a circuit of the park and can be started at any point and completed in either direction. Please download a copy of the map, and our quiz. You can also download a copy of our full leaflet if you prefer.
Please complete our online survey to let us know what you think of our Nature Trail.

Getting to the park: Bus routes 11, 76 & 84 stop on Harborne Lane, No X64 stops on Weoley Avenue and Nos 448 & 647 on Gibbins Rd. Selly Oak Rail Station is 1/2 mile away. Please park at the Scout Hut on Gibbins Rd. See our location map.

Accessibility: The majority of the trail can be accessed by wheelchair but the willow sculpture can only be accessed across grass. However the circuit can be completed using Gibbins Rd from where the willow sculpture can be viewed.

The trail was funded by Birmingham City Council and Grassroots. It was developed by Birmingham City Council and the Friends of Selly Oak Park in partnership with children from St Mary's School, and the Lapal Canal Trust who also made a donation. The Grassroots grant was administered by Birmingham and Black Country Community Foundation.
